On October 22nd, we had a Halloween storytime session at the Nakano Higashi Library in Nakano, Tokyo. The storyteller was Tishini from Sri Lanka, and she introduced the country of Sri Lanka at the beginning of the event.
The children saw a picture of SriLankan curry that looked different from Japanese. It was impressive that the children listened intently to Tishini’s story about her country. Following the storyteller’s introduction, Tishi introduced Halloween-related words using picture cards and led the “What’s missing? “game. After a lively game, we read the picture book of” Boo-Who?” and “What’s in the Witch’s Kitchen?” in English. At the end, the children said Trick or Treat and got stickers from the library instead of sweets.
The SCC collaborates with libraries to run English Storytime.

10月22日に東京都中野区立中野東図書館でハロウィーンおはなし会をしました。読み聞かせをしたのは、スリランカ出身のTishini。最初にスリランカの国のことを紹介しました。子どもたちがイメージしている日本のカレーとは違ったスリランカのカレーの写真を見て、びっくり。Tishiの生まれた国の話を小さな子どもたちが真剣に聞いている様子が印象に残りました。その後、ハロウィンにちなんだ言葉を絵カードを使って導入した後、なくなったのは、なーに？のゲームをしました。ゲームで盛り上がった後に、”Boo-Who?”, “What’s in the Witch’s Kitchen”の絵本を英語で読みました。最後にTrick or Treat と言って、図書館からお菓子代わりのシールをもらいました。
SCCは、図書館と協働で英語の読み聞かせをしています。
