  • Thank you so much for joining our virtual cooking class with your kids today! During this COVID-19 pandemic, we have shifted our cooking event from offline to online and found out how convenient and efficient it is. Nahoko, who has experience working in a Sushi restaurant in Sydney and runs a Japanese cooking class for international visitors, taught us in English how to make sushi rice(vinegared rice) and the technique of rolling sushi. Children from 4yrs to 9yrs all engaged in cooking, mixed the cooked rice with sushi vinegar, spread the sushi rice onto nori seaweed, placed the topping, and rolled with a bamboo roll mat. My 9yrs old daughter and I joined, and she said how tasty it is! Seems so satisfied eating the meal prepared by herself. We are offering a simple recipe for families with children aged 4-12 years old. All the ingredients are easy to prepare and won’t break your budget. The next hands-on online cooking class for kids will be Indian cooking in May! You are going to love it! #sharingcaringculture #yorokobikitchen #japanesecookingclassforkids #thicksushirolls #ehomakisushiroll #washoku #yokohama #internationalcommunity #unleashingthepowerofdiversity #nonprofit #englishactivityforkids

  • \Thanks for helping us get through 2020 and all the best for 2021/ Thank you for joining and supporting SCC throughout the year! 2020 was the most challenging year we've ever had.Since this COVID-19 outbreak, we have started to offer events and sessions online. As we were not used to it, we faced some difficulties and felt somewhat uncomfortable. However, gradually our SCC team members dedicated their time and skill to develop better content, and we could hold some online sessions, even a virtual tour of Korea and India!!! Challenges are growth opportunities. We wish you happy holidays and a season filled with cheers and joy.Have a wonderful break with your loved ones. We are looking forward to talking with you in the new year. Keiko Misaka

  • \Giving December - Indian Virtual Tour with Kids/ Our program for the Giving December donation campaign was an incredible success!
We thank everyone for taking part in the Go on a Virtual Tour of India with Kids. Many thanks to all participants who joined the event and SCC team members and supporters who have engaged in this project.
Especially our thanks and appreciation to our hosts, Rachna, Neha, and Akhila!!!
We couldn’t run without your support. It was a big challenge since we had to host live streaming on Zoom with people living in Japan and India. Our biggest concern was an internet connection and network related issues, so we have had a couple of times of trial sessions with Indian members to resolve it. Finally, we have decided to shoot the scene of Delhi and have an interactive QA session based on the video. Also, we realized that the WiFi connection is stable inside the home, so we asked one family living in western India, Maharastra, to show us their home and had a home visit. During the home visit, we enjoyed the quiz relating to India and enjoyed it all together. This event is for the donation campaign of Giving December, and we received donations of ¥13,500 from 9 participants.
In addition to that, we have collected ¥13,583 throughout this campaign. Thank you so much for the generous donations.
We will hand them to Matthew, our admin member who has been fighting against cancer for 4years. This contribution will be a support for his cancer treatment cost.
#sharingcaringculture

  • \Gender Equality Workshop 外国人と考えるwithコロナ時代のジェンダーギャップ/ Thank you very much for participating in the Gender Equality Workshop at Art Forum Azamino on Nov 14th. 11 participants including university students, foreign residents, and senior citizens came out to join the session. The director of Art Forum Azamino gave the opening speech about how this pandemic situation of COVID-19 is affecting women’s lifestyle negatively and what kind of services or opportunities women can receive from Art Forum Azamino. Zoe, Sofia, and Matthew delivered the presentations on how they feel about the gender inequality in Japan based on their own backgrounds and experiences, for example “a boy is not allowed to wear a pink shirt at school” or “Japanese society set very low expectations about what females can achieve”. Their speeches could have encouraged each participant to think about the current status
of gender inequality in Japan. Therefore, in the discussion part, most participants had a heated discussion about their current situations or problems regarding gender gap in Japan. This workshop was covered by society page of Kanagawa Shinbun issued on Nov 15th. We will discuss more about it in the next workshop that will be held on Feb 6th, 2021. #sharingcaringculture

We have been holding this event since 2018 and usually accepting 30 kids in the room, however it’s the first time to limit the seats for 6 kids per session. All the preparations were done by the storytellers, Elena and Hanako san from ICBA, and this time they showed a finger play and read a story related to vegetables including the Big Turnip. What impressed the children most was the “Aikendrum”flannel board visual pieces to accompany this fun and silly song. Yamauchi library has a big selection of children's book in English and other languages and they’ve added some new books on their shelf! Visit the library with your child and nurture a lifelong love of reading!
